Make a copy of the background layer. This is an important process before you brush. Hold Alt and click an open area in the background, release alt and begin painting over the person you want to remove.

You will need to alt+click more than once, try to use areas which have the same lighting levels. You don't want to alt+click a shadowed area to paint over where it should be lit up.Use harder brushes when getting close to the person you want to keep in the photo.

The next step is to rebuild the lost parts. Probably the hardest part depending on how hard your background was of course . Using the same technique, you can rebuild the person’s body. You can start by cloning or painting in with an eye dropped color to build the basic shape of the missing section.

If your clothing is dark, a simple trick is to add a new brightness/contrast layer to make it a bit easier to see. To do this, click the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button on the bottom of the layers pallet, choose Brightness/Contrast from the menu. We are going to continue the natural folds in the clothing which are already there. Clean up the photo and make it smoother. That’s it, the person has been removed.
